Innovations in Rapid Diagnostics
Date: Thursday, November 17, 2022
Duration: 13:00 – 17:00 hrs
Room: 302 & 303 KLCC
Lead Facilitators:
• R&D Challenges and Emerging Diagnostic Technologies – Travis Schlappi (United States)
• Taking an Idea from the Lab to Commercialization – Jesus Rodriguez Manzano (United Kingdom)
• Integration/Deployment of Diagnostic Tools into the Clinic with Particular Focus in Asian Countries – Sophie Yacoub (Vietnam)
Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) including point-of-care (POC) diagnostics, provide rapid diagnosis near the patient, often within accessible healthcare settings such as outpatient departments, screening sites and in primary care facilities. In contrast to conventional diagnostic assays, which typically rely upon specialized staff and centralized well equipped laboratories, POC tests are simple to use and can support timely, responsive infection management and disease surveillance. They are particularly important within low-resources settings where access to reliable power, cold-chain facilities and specialized laboratories may be limited. Emerging innovations in POC diagnostics, including sample preparation, molecular detection and data analytics offer further opportunities to improve performance, access and expand their role within infectious disease management.
Learning Objectives
This workshop aims to provide an overview of infection management RDTs and will focus on novel, emerging technologies that offer important opportunities to improve diagnosis, disease surveillance and optimize antimicrobial use. Participants will explore and understand:
- The role and characteristics of rapid diagnostics in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance within near patient and laboratory settings.
- Recent technological advances in RDT technologies to improve infection management and support diagnosis of infections and associated antimicrobial resistance genes, particularly in response to emerging infectious disease threats.
- Practical applications of emerging RDTs for dengue, malaria, carbapenem’s resistant organisms and SARS-CoV-2.
- Challenges associated with the development, use and implementation of rapid diagnostics and how emerging technologies address these.
- Integration of novel RDTs to optimize antimicrobial therapy and support real-time epidemiological surveillance using existing diagnostic workflow and hospital infrastructure.
- Limitations and solutions to accelerate the development, manufacture and implementation of new and practical diagnostic tools.

Panel Discussion: Antimicrobials and Vaccines – Equitable Global Access
Date: Saturday, November 19, 2022
Duration: 14:00 – 15:30 hrs
Room: Conference Hall 3 KLCC
Co-Chairs: Alison Holmes (United Kingdom) & Esmita Charani (United Kingdom)
Speakers:
• Equitable Access – Manica Balasegaram (Switzerland)
• Global Vaccine Equity – Gagandeep Kang (India)
• Global Access to Antimicrobials and the Emergence of AMR in the COVID-19 Era – Ghassan Matar (Lebanon)
Conditions to allow for all countries to achieve the global health targets are well defined, however, some bottlenecks to access drugs and vaccines, especially at some regions/ low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) still persist. The overuse of antibiotics accelerates the global spread of drug resistant organisms while the lack of access to antibiotics in LMICs continues to cause significant morbidity and mortality. In LMICs, the mortality burden from treatable bacterial infections far exceeds the estimated deaths from antibiotic-resistant infections. This session will address issues around access to antibiotics and vaccines, antibiotic use as a driver of AMR, and potential ways forward. Speakers will address important questions followed by a moderated discussion:

As one of the diseases classified under the Neglected Tropical Diseases category, Rabies is a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality in resource limited settings – particularly for young patients. Prevention mechanisms through vaccination campaigns span both animal and human spheres, both of which are crucial as timely post-exposure treatment is the only intervention for this otherwise fatal disease. To address this disease threat, the World Health Organization has outlined an ambitious plan to eliminate all rabies deaths by the year 2030. During this session, presenters will discuss vaccination strategies, the role of mass vaccination campaigns in canines will be reviewed as a way to effectively stop the spread of the disease in animals and prevent its spillover into human populations. Finally, challenges related to Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis rabies vaccine administration in humans will be discussed.

COVID-19 Prevention: Leaving No Patient Behind
Sponsored By AstraZeneca
Date: Friday, November 18, 2022
Duration: 12:30 – 13:45 hrs
Room: Conference Hall 1 KLCC
As we approach the third year of the COVID pandemic, we have made enormous advances in the rapid development and distribution of vaccines. With close to 13 billion doses of vaccines distributed globally, these have helped to transform the trajectory of the pandemic in many parts of the world saving many, many millions of lives. Despite this success, the virus continues to circulate and reinfections are common, both in vaccinated populations and in those with previous natural infections. This means those at higher risk of infection, or higher risk of worse clinical outcomes when they do get infected, continue to suffer. Leading experts from across the region will walk you through the success of vaccines in preventing COVID outcomes, addressing questions around the importance of booster doses, while also highlighting those higher risk populations that may require additional support, and ultimately delving into alternate approaches to provide optimal protection for all, ensuring no patient is left behind.
