Zakuan Zainy Deris

Professor Zakuan Deris was trained as clinical microbiologist. Now, he is a professor of Medical Microbiology and head of department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, Universiti Sains Malaysia. He is also the laboratory director of MIcrobiology Laboratory, Hospital USM and leads the diagnostic laboratory for COVID-19. He is the council member of Malaysian Society of Infectious Diseases and Chemotherapy for the past six years and one of the panels for Malaysian Guidelines for Adult Immunization. Professor Zakuan graduated as a Medical Doctor in 1997 and Master in Pathology majoring in Medical Microbiology in 2005. He received PhD from Monash University in antimicrobial pharmacology in 2017. His work mainly focused on antimicrobial resistant and antimicrobial PK/PD. He has a few publications on drug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. He also works on a tropical pathogen, Burkholderia pseudomallei. He has a special interest on prevention of respiratory infections during Muslim’s hajj pilgrimage and has a few publications on this subject.
