Will Welfare is currently interim Director of Regions within Health Protection Operations Group of the UK Health Security Agency. Will has been one of the Public Health Incident Directors for a range of incidents within England including COVID-19 and Monkeypox. Following medical school in Edinburgh and pre registration jobs in South East Scotland, Will undertook core internal medicine training in Newcastle. He then trained in public health in North West England. He joined the Health Protection Agency in 2010 and transferred to Public Health England when it was established. He led the Health Protection Team in Greater Manchester from 2016 to 2020. In January 2020 he became Interim Deputy Director and led the Health Protection Team in North West England until May 2021. Will now leads the UKHSA regional teams within England. He is also honorary senior clinical lecturer at University of Manchester and has a particular research interests in Antimicrobial Resistance and incident response.
