This participatory training workshop invites pharmacists and others within the Infectious Disease community interested in critical themes in infection management, antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and infection prevention and control (IPC), to consider the central role of pharmacists within infectious diseases, in successful stewardship programs and in responding to emerging infectious diseases. This workshop will cover state of the art evidence and real-world experience from around the globe on current practices, the development of senior roles, and the challenges and successes of multi-professional working, particularly in AMS.
Learning Objectives
- Participants will gain a global understanding of the changing dynamic of the role of the pharmacy profession in antimicrobial stewardship.
- Attendees will discuss current challenges and identify sustainable strategies for engaging with the pharmacy profession in AMS in Malaysia and other countries of the region where this is currently not widely practiced.

Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) including point-of-care (POC) diagnostics, provide rapid diagnosis near the patient, often within accessible healthcare settings such as outpatient departments, screening sites and in primary care facilities. In contrast to conventional diagnostic assays, which typically rely upon specialized staff and centralized well equipped laboratories, POC tests are simple to use and can support timely, responsive infection management and disease surveillance. They are particularly important within low-resources settings where access to reliable power, cold-chain facilities and specialized laboratories may be limited. Emerging innovations in POC diagnostics, including sample preparation, molecular detection and data analytics offer further opportunities to improve performance, access and expand their role within infectious disease management.
Learning Objectives
This workshop aims to provide an overview of infection management RDTs and will focus on novel, emerging technologies that offer important opportunities to improve diagnosis, disease surveillance and optimize antimicrobial use. Participants will explore and understand:
- The role and characteristics of rapid diagnostics in the diagnosis and management of infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance within near patient and laboratory settings.
- Recent technological advances in RDT technologies to improve infection management and support diagnosis of infections and associated antimicrobial resistance genes, particularly in response to emerging infectious disease threats.
- Practical applications of emerging RDTs for dengue, malaria, carbapenem’s resistant organisms and SARS-CoV-2.
- Challenges associated with the development, use and implementation of rapid diagnostics and how emerging technologies address these.
- Integration of novel RDTs to optimize antimicrobial therapy and support real-time epidemiological surveillance using existing diagnostic workflow and hospital infrastructure.
- Limitations and solutions to accelerate the development, manufacture and implementation of new and practical diagnostic tools.
